How to Measure for a Canoe Paddle

How do you know what size you need?

Here's our method of measuring for Thetis canoe paddles. There are, of course, exceptions to the rule. Some folks like a longer paddle, some like a shorter. This guide, however, will certainly point you in the right direction! If, however, you are going to error in choosing the right size, error by going shorter instead of longer, your shoulders will thank you (as will your paddling partner).

A bent shaft paddle and higher cadence calls for a shorter paddle. A long, slower pace may call for a slightly longer paddle as will a straight shaft paddle.

1. Have a seat in a chair with a firm bottom

Your standing height doesn't matter since paddling is a sit down activity.

2. Now measure from the seat to your nose

Now, for bent shaft canoe paddles add 18"
to this total; for straight shaft canoe paddles
add 20" to this total.
